Mount Jiuhua is one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism. It is located in Qingyang County in Anhui province and is famous for its rich landscape and ancient temples.

Many of the mountain’s shrines and temples are dedicated to Ksitigarbha (known in Chinese as Dìzàng, Traditional Chinese: 地藏), who is a bodhisattva and protector of souls in hell according to Mahayana Buddhist tradition. Pious Buddhists often come to this popular attraction in Anhui to climb to Greater Tiantai peak, which is regarded as Jiuhuashan’s most important peak, although it is not the tallest.

History of Jiuhua Mountain

Jiuhu Mountain, known as a Buddhist wonderland and famous for its large number of temples and beautiful scenery, has been a resplendent pearl of Chinese cultural heritage.

Jiuhua Mountain was formed in the late Cenozoic Era, and Buddhism began in the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-589) at the mountain. According to historical records, a monk named Fuhu built Fuhu Convent in 503; Monk Tanhao practised Buddhism here in 713; During 713-755, Jin Qiaojue, a Korean aristocrat, came to Jiuhua Mountain and lived in a stone cave at Dongya Peak. His hard practice moved the local people, and they contributed money to build a temple for him. In 781 the local official Zhang Yan presented a memorial to the emperor for the horizontal inscribed board "Huacheng". Upon Jin Qiaojue’s nirvana, it was said that the mountain roared, birds and monkeys cried, and the earth gave out fire and light. His body kept lively three years later, so he was respected as the Earth Buddha, wrapped with earth and has been preserved to present. Roushen Pagoda was built to revere him, and thus Jiuhua Mountain has become the place where Earth Buddhist rites are performed.

The history of Buddhism at Jiuhua Mountain can be divided into five periods: founded in the middle of Tang Dynasty ; decayed from the late Tang Dynasty to the Five Dynasties; slowly developed in the Song and Yuan Dynasties; and greatly developed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the Ming Dynasty, the emperors granted money to rebuild Huacheng Temple for three times and two emperors bestowed inscriptions. The number of temples and nunneries was over a hundred, and many monks and nuns came. It was listed as one of the four famous Buddhist mountains, besides Wutai Mountain, Emei Mountain, and Putuo Mountain.

Yin Ruins Yin Ruins is at Xiaotun Village of Anyang City. In ancient times,Xiaotun was called Yin and it was the capital of the Shang Dynasty. So theperiod was also called Yin Shang. After the Yin had been overthrown, the citydeclined and the remains of it was later called the Yin Ruins. Since thefounding of new China, the Yin Ruins had been listed as the first group ofcultural relics under national protection. In order to preserve its culture, thegovernment built “Garden of the Yin Ruins” on the site. Today the garden isdivided into several sections with ancient objects on display. Because of itsgreat value in not only the historical relics of Chinese culture but also thehuman civilization of the whole world, Yin Xu topped the 100 GreatestArcheological Discoveries of China in the last century and it was listed in theWorld Cultural and Natural Heritage List of United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Yin Xu is revealing its beauty tothe world.

OK, everybody. Soon we’ll get to the Museum on Yin Ruins, the best museumfor the study of the Yin Shang Culture. The Yin Ruins is famous for threethings,i.e.the oracle inscriptions, the bronze wares and the ancient capital ofthe Shang Dynasty. As you know, China is one of the earliest countries todiscover characters. As early as 4,000 years ago, people used bones or tortoiseshells to record events of their social life. It is the earliest written form oflanguage in the world. Today we call them the oracle bone inscriptions, whichwere first discovered in the Yin Ruins. Well, let’s come to the main hall wherethe oracle inscriptions are exhibited. The oracle bone inscriptions were firstdiscovered during the years of Emperor GuangXu, in the Qing Dynasty. In 1899, inXiao Tun Village of Anyang City, Henan Province, villagers found many tortoiseshells and bones carved with letters and symbols, which unveiled to the worldfrom Yin Xu, an ancient city with a long history and splendid culture. Then morethan 16,000 pieces of bones and shells were found. But in the Shang Dynasty, they were used as divinations, when people were very superstitious. Theinscriptions cover a wide range of fields, such as sacrifice, wars, stateaffairs, weather, hunting, etc. Today, they provide important information forthe study of the Shang Dynasty. And the study of the oracle bone inscriptionshas become a new subject and is getting more popular among people. Since

then this place has become of great interest to worldwide archeologists, because those inscriptions have proved to be the earliest written characters ofhuman beings, the Oracles. Apart from the oracle bone inscriptions, bronze waresare another important part of the cultural relics discovered from the Ruins, which show that the technology of bronze casting reached its peak in the ShangDynasty. The bronze wares include vessels, weapons, chariots and so on. Among allthe unearthed wares, SimuwuQuadripod unearthed in the mausoleum area of the YinRuins, the largest and the most famous bronze sacrificial vessel in the world,is 875 kg in weight, 133 cm in height. Standing on the open plaza in front ofthe great hall is an enlarged copy of the original one for the convenience oftouring and appreciation, with the original one cherished in the Museum ofChinese History. With its unusual air of majesty, together with its elegance inappearance and intricately carved in patterns, it is considered a treasure inthe bronze culture of China as well as a glorious pearl shining on the peak ofthe world art. To cast such a significant vessel carrying such a great weight, advanced techniques and experiences in organization of laborers are necessary. As many scholars have pointed out, this huge bronze quadripod reflects theadvanced slavery system of the Shang Dynasty and the unusual power of creationof the people. Finally we come to the side of the imperial palaces and tombs.Lying on the southwest of the Foundation Ruins C, Fuhao Tomb is one of the mostimportant archeology discoveries in the temple. It is also the only discoveredand well-reserved tomb of Shang royal members since the science excavation ofYin Ruins. Now, let’s know something about the first woman general in Chinesehistory.FuHao was Emperor Wu Ding’s wife, both intelligent and courageous. Shehad bravely led the Yin army fighting in many wars and made great contributionsto the protecting of the country. After her death, Wu Ding built a large tombnear the palace to honor her merits. Buried together with her were many slavesand war prisoners as well assacrificial objects. The large numbers ofsacrificial objects are valuable cultural relics in the treasure house ofChinese art.

The ancient city of Lijiang is divided into three tributaries: theWest River, the middle river and the East River, and then into countlesstributaries because of the Yuquan water running through the whole city. Thereare also many longtans and springs in the city. Taking advantage of thisfavorable condition, the ancient city has a free layout of streets and no needfor neat network. The main street is next to the river, and the alleys are closeto the canals. The clear spring water flows through the street and the town, andthrough the walls and houses. The poetic flavor of "every family flows withwater, and every family hangs with Yang" is a true portrayal of the ancientcity. Although it is a small town in Yunnan Guizhou Plateau, it has thecharacteristics of Jiangnan Water Town.

When it comes to Wuzhen, friends who like Liu Ruoying must be familiar withher. From the time when she was photographing to becoming the image ambassadorof Wuzhen recently, it can be said that Liu Ruoying and Wuzhen have formed anindissoluble bond. Today, we will go to this millennium old town and follow LiuRuoyings idea to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the ancient town. It is oftensaid that one side of the soil and water nourishes another side of the people.Wuzhen is indeed a place of outstanding people. It is a land of elegantgeomantic omen. Many outstanding talents have been born since ancient times.According to the records of this town, from the Song Dynasty to the late QingDynasty, there were 64 Jinshi and 161 Juren in the town, and Mao Dun, a greatliterary master, appeared in modern times. It can be said that people thrivebecause of the town, and the town is named because of the people.

Since Wuzhen is so famous, we must be very curious about the origin ofWuzhen. Before the Southern Song Dynasty, Wuzhen was divided into two towns,Wuzhen and Qingzhen, with Chexi as the boundary. Wuzhen in the west of the Riverbelongs to Huzhou Prefecture, while Qingzhen in the east of the River belongs toJiaxing Prefecture. After the liberation of China, the districts of Wuzhen andQingzhen were unified and managed by Jiaxing City. There is another short storyabout the origin of the name "Wuzhen": it is said that in the Tang Dynasty, LiQi, the governor of Zhejiang Province, wanted to be a separate ruler and king, and raised his troops to revolt. The imperial court ordered general wuzan tolead his troops to attack. This wuzan general is highly skilled in martial artsand is good at fighting bravely, which makes Li Qis rebels retreat step bystep. When hit the Chexi River, Li Qi suddenly listed a truce. Just as thegeneral of Ukraine camped and rested on the spot, Li Qi attacked the camp of theUkrainian army that night. General Wu rushed to fight, and finally fell into thetrap set by Li Qi on the bridge. They were shot dead by the rebels on the spot.Although Zhang was defeated, general wuzans loyalty and patriotism moved allthe local people. In memory of him, we used his surname as the name of thetown.

It said something about the history of Wuzhen. Our friends go to Wuzhen toplay. What should we play when we go to Wuzhen? Its nothing more than eating, wearing and traveling. When it comes to eating, maybe most of our friends startto get excited. After all, food is the most important thing for the people.Dont worry, listen to Xiao Wangs introduction. When it comes to Wuzhensfamous food, I have to mention this aunt cake. Hearing this name, I think youhave guessed it. It must have something to do with the relationship between auntand sister-in-law. Its true. According to legend, in the Ming Dynasty, therewas a family surnamed Zhang in the town, who made a living by making pancakesfor his sister-in-law for generations. Because it is an exclusive formula, natural flavor is unique, so enduring business is booming. But there is anunwritten rule in Zhangs family. In order to ensure that the secret recipe willbe passed on from generation to generation, it is stipulated that the secretrecipe will only be passed on to the daughter-in-law, not to the daughter. Afterall, my daughter will be married in the future, and she will become a member ofother peoples family. When it came to the Ming Dynasty, my sister-in-law wasvery unhappy when she saw that her mother only taught her sister-in-law how tomake cakes. After all, my sister-in-law has only been married to my family formore than a year, and I have been in this family for more than ten years, and mymother has never taught me. So I couldnt get along with my sister-in-laweverywhere. One day, when my sister-in-law was making cakes, it began to rain.So my sister-in-law said to her sister-in-law, "sister-in-law, its rainingoutside. Go and collect your clothes quickly.". My sister-in-law ran out as soonas she heard that. When my sister-in-law saw that her sister-in-law was out, shewas angry, but secretly grabbed a bar of salt and threw it into the pan.Coincidentally, todays guests who ate Aunt Zhangs Pancakes all said thattodays Pancakes taste unusual and better than before. My sister-in-law isstrange. Im still doing the same thing as before. How can it be different

Well. So she ate a piece of it herself, and she felt that the taste wasreally abnormal.

At this time, my sister-in-law began to talk. "Sister in law, if you wantto understand why the cake tastes so good today, and if you want to make it sogood every day in the future, tell me the secret recipe for making the cakefirst." sister in law, however, told her the recipe for making the cake. Ofcourse, my sister-in-law is also very honest to tell her how to do somethingbad, but it backfires and its a blessing in disguise. Because the practice atthe moment is shared by my sister-in-law, so I named this cake "sister-in-lawcake". After the visit, you may as well buy some for free activities. Aftersaying "sister-in-law cake", of course, we have to talk about the specialproduct of Wuzhen, "three Baijiu". Three Baijiu is handmade naturally. Becausewhite rice, white noodles and white water are used as raw materials, it iscalled "three Baijiu". Others are Hangzhou white chrysanthemum, white water fishand braised pork. After dinner, we can order some to taste.

After talking about eating, lets get to the point. Blue calico is one ofthe specialties of Wuzhen, commonly known as "lime calico" and "calico". It is atraditional folk craft in China. It is made of cotton thread, soybean powder andbluegrass juice. It is purely hand-made and environmentally friendly. You canbuy some small things. For example, a lady who loves beauty can buy one or twoblue calico headscarves and small handbags as souvenirs. I suggest you dont buyclothes, because at the moment, no one is willing to wear these kinds ofclothes. Secondly, blue calico is easy to fade. When its hot, its not good towear this kind of clothes and sweat all over the body like a leopard. ha-ha.Others are handmade cotton shoes and slippers. We buy at our own discretion.

Next, Ill introduce the most important tour to you, so that you can graspthe key points and be targeted when you visit. As I said just now, Wuzhen is thehometown of Mao Dun, a great literary scientist, so naturally, Mao Duns formerresidence must be visited. To visit the water town is nothing more than to seethe architecture and taste the folk customs. And the "street pillow water, pinkwall Daiwa" is the common features of water architecture, since we have to seeits most distinctive things in Wuzhen. The architectural features of Wuzhen areconcentrated in the Xiuzhen temple and the ancient stage at the head of thetown. So you must not miss the first scenic spot of Xiuzhen temple. There is ascenic spot announcer in the temple to explain to you. I will send the ticketsto you at the gate when I go in. After visiting the first scenic spot, those whoare willing to visit with me will follow me, and those who are not willing toplan to move freely with me will be able to move freely. Lets go back to theintroduction of you. As the saying goes, "ten li is not the same sound, hundredLi is not the same vulgar.". It is estimated that Nanjing is 500 li away fromWuzhen, so the folk customs are even more different. Wuzhen just provides uswith a platform to watch folk customs. There are many pavilions in the town, such as Jiangnan wood carving exhibition hall, Hongtai dyeing workshop bluecalico exhibition hall, Jiangnan hundred beds hall, folk custom hall and so on.Later, Xiao Wang will show you around one by one.

Ok, now we are heading for Mt.Jiuhua, which is known as one of the four Buddhist Mountains in China. It’s about 30 minutes’ bus ride. On the way you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and I’d like to give you a brief introduction about Mt.Jiuhua.

Mt.Jiuhua was originally known as Jiuzi (Nine-Peak) Mount. Li Bai, a famous Chinese poet over 1300 years ago wrote of the mountain: ”sailing on the Yangtze River, watching Mt.Jiuhua from after, green water falls from the sky, nine lotuses appear in the air.” This expresses the poet’s great admiration for Mt.Jiuhua. From then on, the mountain was renamed as Mt.Jiuhua.

Mt.Jiuhua covers more than 100 square kilometers in area, which has been known to have 99 peaks, and the main peak of the Shiwang Peak is 1342m above sea level. Mt.Jiuhua is full of waterfalls, streams, exotic-looking boulders, ancient caves, old pines and exuberant bamboo. With the richly variegated landscape, the ancient temples are tucked away amid the dense woods and the air reverberates with the tolling of the bells at dawn and dusk. Mt.Jiuhua is usually known as the No.1 Mountain of the southeast.

Ok, I have said too much about the Mt.Jiuhua, and I expect you have got a general idea about it. Seeing is Beliving. I’m sure you will learn a lot about Chinese culture and Buddhism after the visit, and you will also be impressed deeply by the wonderful scenery. Let’s get off the bus and bring your camera. I’ll show you around the scenic areas.

Look! So many monks, why? Yes, that’s it! Because Mt.Jiuhua is a Buddhist mountain. Especially on July 30th of Chinese Lunar is the birthday of Earch Buddha, and a great Buddhist ceremony is held on this day. Around that day every year, the mountain is the site of a temple fair. A large number of monks, nuns, pilgrims and visitors come to burn incense, chant and sacrifice food. The activities of each year are different. Though today is not the festival, we can also enjoy the beautiful scenery. They are: Sunrise at Tiantai Platform, Evening bell of Huacheng Temple, Sitting on East Stone with pleasure, Fairy mark of Tianzhu, Taoyan waterfall, clouds around lotus peak and Phoenix Pine.

Ok, here we are, this is Huacheng Temple of Jiuhua Street. It was the first and oldest of all the temples of Mt.Jiuhua. Over 1500 years ago, Monk Beidu built a simple temple here. Then after 300 years it was reconstructed and named Huacheng Temple.

You see it lies a round plaza. Look at the center! What do you see? Yeah! It is a crescent shaped lotus pond named “Crescent Moon Pond” you can go towards it, what do you see? It is believed that Monk Jin Qiaojue used to free captive fish. Ok, now I say some brief introduction about it and then you can go around it. We’ll gather here after one hour, ok? The temple consists of four parts: the lobby, the grand hall, the back hall and the Scripture Tower. The ground slopes up with each part and the whole layout is natural. The doors, windows, brackets, beams, columns, steps and the cornerstone are carved with exquisite designs. In the hall are preserved horizontal boards inscribed by emperor in ancient time.

Ok! Is everyone here? 1, 2, 3… Ok, now, let’s go to see the Phoenix Pine, in Minyuan Scenic Area. Phoenix Pine is over 1400 years old, and is one of the four decorative trees in Anhui Province.

After seeing Phoenix Pine, we’ll finish our travel, and on behalf of my company, my Chinese colleagues and myself, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my thanks for your consideration, understanding, tolerance and cooperation.

Hello and welcome to Jingdezhen ancient kiln factory. Im your guide.

Now I will use my time on the road to tell you something aboutceramics.

As the saying goes: people take food as their heaven, and food needsutensils. It can be seen that ceramics are closely related to humancivilization.

We humans invented pottery as early as 5000 or 6000 years ago, andporcelain was developed on the basis of pottery.

Porcelain is more delicate than pottery.

Smooth.

Hard.

The firing temperature is also higher. Another point is that porcelain ismade from porcelain ore, while pottery is made from clay.

Another explanation of China is that porcelain is as famous as Chinaabroad.

And the most representative porcelain is in Jingdezhen, which is known asthe capital of porcelain. Even Jingdezhen is the origin of porcelain.

In ancient times, because Jingdezhen was located in the south of ChangjiangRiver, it was called Changnan town. Later, it was called Xinping town andFuliang town.

It was not until the Northern Song Dynasty that Zhao Heng, Emperor Zhenzongof the Song Dynasty, decided that Zhongying celadon was imperial porcelainbecause he saw the place of origin of the celadon. Every batch of porcelain madeby the craftsmen was marked with "Jingde year system", so the imperial courtcalled the place of origin of this kind of porcelain "Jingdezhen".

The porcelain that Jingdezhen people are proud of is "blue and whiteporcelain, exquisite porcelain, pastel porcelain, colored glaze and thin bodyporcelain.

They are as white as jade, as bright as a mirror, as loud as a chime, andas thin as paper.

Well, now we have come to fulonggang in the West urban area. This ancientbuilding, which is covered by trees, is the ancient kiln porcelain factory weare going to visit today. As far as I know, there is only one such porcelainfactory in the world.

Who knows why it is called "ancient kiln porcelain factory"? Because thisfactory uses the method of Jingdezhen Ming and Qing Dynasties to make porcelain. The porcelain making process, tools, workshops and kilns are ancient, and theproducts are mostly antique, so it is called.

Next, please follow me in.

Entering this blank room, you can see that the ancient porcelain makingworkshop is composed of four parts: the main room, the chamber, the mud room andthe inner courtyard. The main room and the chamber match in North and south, andthey are parallel. The mud room is located in the west, and the middle is arectangular inner courtyard.

Among them, the main body of the green house is the main room, facingsouth, with sufficient lighting. All the workshops for the production ofporcelain are completed here. The windlass is the main equipment for theproduction of porcelain, and the warehouse is the place for storing rawmaterials.

The mud room is filled with refined mud, and the inner courtyard is anatural dry place for porcelain. In the middle of the inner courtyard, there isa sun rack pond, which is the most important equipment in the ancient workshop, and it is very ingenious. Who knows its beauty? Its beauty is that the pool andsun pool make use of the space and reduce the land occupation.

Come and see this master. He is putting a ball of mud on the head of thepulley. His hands are touching each other. With the rotation of the wheel, therudiment of a bowl appears. This is "making billet, commonly known as drawingbillet".

Lets see here again. The master is concentrating on spinning, drawing thefirst batch to a certain extent, and then using a knife on the pulley car to cutit into the required batch, commonly known as "spinning" or "sharpening". Ofcourse, the technological process of the ancient kiln porcelain factory alsoincludes painting porcelain, glazing and entering the kiln. Look at thesemasters painting porcelain here. Lets see how long it takes to draw a bowl.Yes, it takes only 10 seconds, The bowl is full of colorful camellia.

Lets go this way. Lets take a look at the kiln house that turns theporcelain body into porcelain. Firing porcelain in the kiln house depends on thepractice of workers, strict labor combination and fine division of labor.

There is a technical director in the kiln, who is called "masterBozhuang".

When it comes to Ba, Master Zhuang cant talk about Tong Bin.

He was a famous master of bazhuang in Wanli period. He was highly skilled, upright and respected by kiln workers.

At that time, he was ordered to make the extra large blue and white dragonVAT. Tong Bin and the porcelain workers tried every means to make it, but itfailed many times. Seeing that the delivery date was approaching, it was hard todisobey the emperors orders. For the sake of the life of the porcelain workers,he jumped into a raging fire at the critical moment of the firing processagain.

Its strange to say that he really succeeded this time. People say that itwas because Tong Bin showed his spirit. Later, people named him "fenghuoxian".Its about the story of Master Zhuang - Tong Bin jumping in the kiln.

Master Ba Zhuang is the chief person in charge of the wood kiln firingprocess. He is responsible for all kinds of technical problems in the firingprocess. When the porcelain is ready to be cooked but not yet ripe, the time tostop firing is the most critical. If the firing time is too long, the porcelainwill burn yellow or even fall into the kiln. If the firing time is too short, the porcelain will not be cooked again. At this time, master Ba Zhuangs eyesare completely relied on.

Ladies and gentlemen, thats the end of todays tour. I hope I can guideyou later.

thank you!!

In order to facilitate your visit, let me first introduce you.

Here are six ancient buildings, which are precious examples of ancientindustrial buildings in China.

Each group of embryo square is like a closed Sanhe courtyard or quadrangle, which is composed of three or four buildings open to the courtyard.

In the embryo room, the workers use the traditional hand-made porcelaintechnology to make the visitors marvel.

There is also a simple and tall Town kiln in the factory.

The kiln uses pine wood as fuel.

The kiln is 18 meters long. It is in the shape of goose egg, big in thefront and small in the back. A thin-walled chimney about 21 meters high is builtat the tail.

This is the result of the ancient architectural craftsmans skillful use ofthe center of gravity and curved shape of curved wood to erect and erect beams. It can be said that it has unique ingenuity and is also a great spectacle in thehistory of Chinese architecture.

Inside the exhibition is also worth seeing, although it is a replica, butit still makes people feel good-looking, the coolest is the 108 Water Margincharacters porcelain, just like the real one.

At the pottery bar, I touched the clay with my hand. It was cold andcomfortable.

I made one myself with the help of my master.

After the September 18th Incident in 1931, the Japanese aggressors pushedforward step by step, and the treasures stored in Beiping Palace Museum moved tothe south. Under the chairmanship of Ma Heng, the president of the PalaceMuseum, about 200000 pieces of antiquities were removed from the palace museumafter selection, cataloguing, numbering and packing, including the travel map ofXi Shan.

The antiquities were stored in Shanghai, transported to Sichuan on the eveof the Anti Japanese War, moved back to Nanjing after the victory of the AntiJapanese War, and moved from Nanjing to Chinese Taiwan in 1948. Fortunately, althoughthe war was in chaos and the war was raging, the cultural relics weretransported for a long time and the roads were dangerous, but there was nodamage or loss. It was a miracle indeed.

The Palace Museum, located in waishuangxi, covers an area of 20 squaremeters. It was built in 1962 and completed in 1965 in commemoration of Sun YatSens birthday. The whole building imitates the form of the Palace Museum inBeijing and adopts the Chinese palace style design. It has a magnificentappearance and carries green mountains. It is where the elite art of Chinesecultural relics collection lies.

today we’ll visit the great mosque. it stood west of the drum tower in huajue lane. it is the most sizable mosques in the city of xi’an which is also one of the oldest and best-preserved mosques in china.

standing outside of the great mosques, we can see this one is not like the mosques in arabian with splendid domes, skyward eaves, and dazzling patterns. this mosque possesses much chinese tradition in both design and styles outlook. it shows the culture combinations between china and other countries.

next, we are going to talk about how islam was introduced into china. islam was founded in the early period of the 7th century and was introduced to china in the middle of the 7th century. at that time, some merchants, travelers, and missionaries from arabic countries, persia, and afghanistan by land over the sink road and also by sea. many of them settled down and married the local women. their children became the first generation of chinese moslems. however, massive immigration of moslems to china was the result of genghis khan’s western expedition in the 13th century. he conquered vast of land from central asia to east europe, including the northern part of iran. many of the moslems were forced to enlist in the army. then in the 14th century, lots of moslems took part in zhu yuan zhang’s uprising. therefore, all the emperors of the ming dynasty ordered to protect the moslems for their great contributions. nowadays, there are 17 million moslems in china. the moslems in xi’an are mainly the hui people. ok, now, after known so much about the background history, you must curious about the great mosque. let’s get in and check it out.

it is said that the mosque was built in tang dynasty. however, judging from its architectural style, it was probably built in the ming dynasty.

after get into the first courtyard, we can see there is a wood material arch which is nine meters high in front of us. it was built earlier in the 17th century. with glazed tiles, grand corners, and upturned eaves, the arch has a history of 360 years but still preserved very well.

this way, please. we are going to the second courtyard. there are a lot of trees and flowers here. in the center of this yard is a stone gateway. two tall tablets, with dragons caved on each , are standing at the two sides of the gateway. they record the details of the repair works since it was built. one of these tablets carved “may islam fill the universe” was wrote by mi fu, a famous calligrapher in song dynasty who is also a moslem. the other one carved “royally bestowed” wrote by dong qichang in ming dynasty. these characters are treasures of chinese calligraphy.

keep going, we’ll arrive at the third courtyard. at the entrance of this yard, we can see a moon tablet. it was wrote in arabic and used to show the calculation of the hui calendars and the time for them to resume a meat diet. it was compiled by a man in charge of the mosque called xiao xining. then, we’ll notice the three-storeyed wooden structure building in the center. that is called the “retrospection tower”. the function of this tower is calling the moslems to come to worship. it is the highest point of this great mosques. now, everyone, on the southwest side of the tower, we can see five wooden houses, we called them the “water houses”. it is the place for moslems clean themselves before they attend their services.

next, the forth courtyard is waiting for us, keep walking, please. the structure in the centre was called the “phoenix pavilion”. in fact, it is a complex of three small buildings. the six-gabled buildings in the central part and the two three-gabled buildings on each side which make it looks like a flying phoenix. just like the name of the pavilion. across the pavilion, we will find a fish pond. passed it, we will see the platform, the prayer hall is the just on the top of the platform where take more than 1,000 prayers at the same time. the prayer hall is facing to the east. that’s really not quite chinese. that is the custom of moslem that the prayer hall has to back of the mecca. in china, mecca located to the west of china.

as you know, moslems are lived in china almost everywhere. you can ask whether moslems in china and other moslems shared the same custom? the answer is obviously yes. they worship five times a day: at dawn, at noon, in the afternoon, at dusk, and at night. female worshipers attend their services in a separated place from their brothers, usually at home.

i don t know whether you have met a moslem before, if you do, you may notice they never eat pork and animal blood. why? in koran, pigs have been mentioned four times as being “unclean”. moslem respected koran very much, they everything followed it, so they never eat pork. just one thing in china that moslems can not followed. according to koran, a man can marry 4 wives, but as the law of china, a man can marry only one wife. that might be the different thing between the moslems in china and other moslems.

after visiting this great mosque in huajue lane, you can see that they lived happy and freedom here. you know, in china each citizen has the freedom of religions belief, and each group has the freedom of to keep their own custom. surely, the moslems in china enjoy equal rights as the majority nations and their religious beliefs and customs are respected everywhere in the country.

In the north of China, there lies a 6, 700-kilometer-long (4, 161-mile-long) ancient wall. Now well-known as the Great Wall of China, it starts at the Jiayuguan Pass of Gansu Province in the west and ends at the Shanhaiguan Pass of Hebei Province in the east. As one of the Eight Wonders in the world, the Great Wall of China has become the symbol of the Chinese nation and its culture. Lots of beautiful legends and stories about the Great Wall took place following along the construction, and since that time these stories have spread around the country.

Those that happened during construction are abundant, such as Meng Jiangnu‘s story and the legend of the Jiayuguan Pass. Meng Jiangnu‘s story is the most famous and widely spread of all the legends about the Great Wall. The story happened during the Qin Dynasty (221BC- 206BC). It tells of how Meng Jiangnu‘s bitter weeping made a section of the Great Wall collapse. Meng Jiangnu‘s husband Fan Qiliang was caught by federal officials and sent to build the Great Wall. Meng Jiangnu heard nothing from him after his departure, so she set out to look for him. Unfortunately, by the time she reached the great wall, she discovered that her husband had already died. Hearing the bad news, she cried her heart out. Her howl caused the collapse of a part of the Great Wall. This story indicates that the Great Wall is the production of tens of thousands of Chinese commoners. Another legend about the Jiayuguan Pass tells of a workman named Yi Kaizhan in the Ming Dynasty (1368BC-1644BC) who was proficient in arithmetic. He calculated that it would need 99, 999 bricks to build the Jiayuguan Pass. The supervisor did not believe him and said if they miscalculated by even one brick, then all the workmen would be punished to do hard work for three years. After the completion of the project, one brick was left behind the Xiwong city gate.

The supervisor was happy at the sight of the brick and ready to punish them. However Yi Kaizhan said with deliberation that the brick was put there by a supernatural being to fix the wall. A tiny move would cause the collapse of the wall. Therefore the brick was kept there and never moved. It can still be found there today on the tower of the Jiayuguan Pass.

Huaqing Pool is situated about 35 kilometres east of the city of Xi’an. Historically, the Western Zhou dynasty saw the construction of the Li Palace on the spot. In the Qin dynasty a pool was built with stones, and was given the name Lishan Tang (the Lishan Hot Spring). The site was extended into a palace in the Han dynasty, and renamed the Li Palace (the Resort Palace). In the Tang dynasty, Li Shimin (Emperor Tai Zong) ordered to construct the Hot Spring Palace, and Emperor Xuan Zong had a walled palace built around Lishan Mountain in the year of 747. It was known as the Huaqing Palace. It also had the name Huaqing Pool on account of its location on the hot springs.

Huaqing Pool is located at the foot of the Lishan Mountain, a branch range of the Qinling Ranges, and stands 1,256 metres high. It is covered with pines and cypresses, looking very much like a like a dark green galloping horse from a long distance. So it has the name of the Lishan Mountain (Li means a black horse).

The Tang dynasty Emperor Xuan Zong and his favourite lady, Yang Gui Fei used to make their home at Frost Drifting Hall in winter days. When winter came, snowflakes were floating in the air, and everything in sight was white. However, they came into thaw immediately in front of the hall. It owed a great deal to the luke warm vapour rising out of the hot spring. This is the Frost Drifting Hall that greets us today.

Close by the Frost Drifting Hall lies the Nine Dragon Pool. According to legend, the Central Shaanxi Plain was once stricken by a severe drought in the very remote past. Thus, by the order of the Jade Emperor (the Supreme Deity of Heaven), an old dragon came at the head of eight young ones, and made rain here. Yet when the disaster was just abating, they lowered their guard so much that it became serious again. In a fit of anger, the Jade Emperor kept the young dragons under the Jade Cause Way (玉堤), with the Morning Glow Pavilion and the Sunset Pavilion built at both ends of it respectively, to make the young dragons spout cleat water all day long to meet the needs of local irrigation. Besides, he had the old dragon confined to the bottom of the Roaring Dragon Waterside Pavilion situated at the upper end of the Jade Causeway, and obliged him to exercise control over the young.

The Nine-Bend Corridor west of the Nine Dragon Pool leads directly to the Marble Boat, which resembles a dragon boat on the water surface. In the Marble Boat lies the Nine Dragon Tang (the Nine Dragon Hot Spring where Emperor Xuan Zong used to take baths). At the head of his court ladies and hundreds of his officials, he would come to the Huanqing Palace to spend his winter days in October of the Lunar calendar and return to Chang’an City as the year drew to its close. The Nine Dragon Hot Spring was originally built with crystal jade, whose surface was decorated with the carvings of fish, dragons, birds and flowers. In it twin lotus flowers also carved with white jade could be seen as well. The spring water welled from the break of an earthen jar, and spouted up to the lotus flowers. Hence the name Lotus Flower Tang (the Lotus Flower Hot Spring).

The Gui Fei Bathing Pool was where Yang Gui Fei, Emperor Xuan Zong’s favorite lady, used to take bath. It was originally built with white jade, and in its center a blooming flower spouted water like a spring. The pool looked very much like a Chinese flowering crabapple; Hence its name the Chinese Flowering Crabapple Hot Spring or the Lotus Hot Spring..

Lady Yang used to make a stay in this pavilion to see sights or to air her hair after a bath. Therefore, it was named the Hair Airing Pavilion. Whether the sun was rising or setting, the pavilion was aglow with sunshine; hence the name the Flying Roseate Pavilion.

Southwest of the Gui Fei Bathing Pool stands a brick-built pavilion. On its head three big Chinese characters Xi Jia Lou” (Fine Sunset-Bathed Pavilion)are inscribed according to the model of the most celebrated according to the model of the most celebrated Chinese calligrapher, Yu You Ren, here is the source of the spring water.

At this spa there are four hot springs. They have an hourly flow of 112 tons, and a constant temperature of 43°C. The spring water contains lime, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate and other minerals, which makes it suitable for bathing and considerable treatment of quite a few diseases such as dermatosis, rheumatism, arthritis and muscular pain. The Fine Sunset-Bathed Pavilion marks the first source of the spring water, which was discovered some 3,000 years ago, roughly in the Western Zhou Dynasty. Its water flow averages 25 tons per hour.

Take up the steps east of the source of hot springs, you will gradually see the Five-Room Pavilion where Chiang Kaishek made a temporary stay during the Xi’an Incident.

The Xi’an Incident took place on December 12, 1936, and it is also known as the Double Twelfth Incident. After the Incident of September 18, 1936, the Japanese imperialists seized the three provinces northeast of China, and intensified their invasion of North China. This was the very moment vital to the Chinese nation. Yet Chiang Kaichek persisted doggedly in carrying out his reactionary policy domestic tranquility is a must for the resistance against Japanese invades,” and commanded the Northeast Army and Northwest Army, respectively headed by Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, to attack the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. Inspired by our Party’s policy let us stop the internal war and unit to resist the Japanese aggressors,” those two generals made to Chiang Kaishek the proposal of forming a united front with the Communist Party for the resistance. Not only did he reject the proposal, but flew to Xi’an to scheme the suppression of the Communist Party.” And the slaughter of the patriotic youth. Out of patriotism, Zhang and Yang started the famous Xi’an Incident.

Very early on the morning of December 12, 1936 the Incident was impending. Zhang Xueliang, together with Yang Hucheng ordered a squad of bodyguards to surround the Huaqing Pool. They fought a fierce battle there, and wiped out Chiang’s bodyguards in one vigorous effort. The sound of firing came to Chiang Kaishek, and he was so terrified that he crept out of the window with his nightgown and slippers only. What’s more, he hurt his spinal bone, and lost one of his slippers while crossing over the back wall. He staggered up Lishan Mountain, and hid himself behind a stone in the crevice halfway on it. Those brave soldiers began to search the mountain immediately when they rushed into the Five-Room Pavilion to find that Chiang’s hat and clothes were still there and that his quilt remained warm. In the end they found Chiang Kaishek, and thus escorted him to Xi’an.

In order to avoid a civil war and try t establish a national united front for the resistance against Japan, Mao Zedong on behalf of the C.C.P.C. insisted on a peaceful settlement of the Incident. Therefore, a delegation headed by Zhou Enlai was sent to Xi’an. Zhou Enlai and his suite did a large amount of work there, took everything possible into consideration, and ultimately forced Chiang Kaishek to accept the proposal by his two generals. On December 25, Chiang was freed, and flew back to Nanjing. The Xi’an Incident was so peacefully settled.

The peaceful settlement of the Incident put an end to the internal war which had lasted for ten years, and accelerated the formation and development of the national united front for the anti-Japanese drive. Moreover, it showed that the co-operative relationships between the Communist and Nationalists arrived at a new stage. It marked a great turning point in modern Chinese history.

In the year of 1946 the KMT government had a National Rejuvenation Pavilion” built near the crevice where Chiang Kaishek had hidden himself in the Incident. It was also called Vital Energy Pavilion”. After the national liberation it was renamed Catching Chiang Pavilion”. Close by the pavilion stands a wooden board which carries a brief introduction to the Xi’an Incident. Iron chains and rings in the crevices east of the pavilion, by which visitors can climb up to take a look at Chiang Kaishek’s shelter.

Up the winding path east of the Five-Room-Pavilion you will catch sight of a bridge-like construction. It shines regularly with a myriad of evening sun rays both in summer and autumn, and looks very much like rainbow. So it has the name of the Hovering Rainbow Bridge.

Located on the Xixiu Ridge (the West Embroidery Ridge) of the Lishan Mountain, the remains of the beacon tower of the Western Zhou Dynasty seem easy to identify.

The beacon tower was mostly built at the top of the mountain to give border alarm in ancient times. It was constantly under special control. Once the enemies were pressing on towards the border, the beacon tower began to take effect: it was made to smoke in the daytime while set on fire at night.

The story goes that Bao Si, Queen of the Western Zhou dynasty was highly honored, yet she never cracked a smile. King You tried many ways to put a smile on her face, but he failed over and over again. He called his court band to toll bells and beat gongs”, and she pulled a long face. Then the band were asked to play the bamboo flute and strings” and she remained displeased. Afterwards, maids of honour served wine, festively singing and dancing,” and she did not let out a smile at all.

You don’t like music! What on earth are you fond of?” the King asked.

I nearly have a liking for nothing. But I can still well remember I liked to give ear to the sound of tearing a piece of coloured silk when I was a child. It was clear anf melodious,” she replied. King You said in excitement, That is very simple. How come you didn’t let me know it earlier?”

Thus he ordered the officially appointed property manager to offer coloured silk, and made fresh and energetic maids of honour to tear it into pieces. Hundreds of bolts of coloured silk were utterly torn, but Bao Si remained unmoved.

Why didn’t you let out a single smile then?” he asked.

I have never smiled so far, ” the Queen replied.

The King tried over and over again, but failed repeatedly, and in the end he gave orders, Anyone both in and out of court who can amuse Bao Si will be awarded one thousand pieces of gold.”

Afterwards Guo Shifu, a treacherous court official came and offered advice: Set the beacon tower on fire and fool your sovereign rulers.” That night the King and Queen reached the Lishan Mountain by carriage, and gave the order. In the split second the flames of the fire lit up the sky ad the sovereign rulers moved their troops immediately to the Lishan Mountain. There they found nothing but that the King and Queen enjoyed drinking festively. The King then dispatched his bodyguard to inform them that Everything should have been all right. I have just been joking with you.” When they got this, they looked at each other in blank dismay, and left disappointed. Sure enough, Bao Si burst into laughter, stroking her hands when she noticed all the troops come in vain and go noisily. Accordingly, Guo Shifu got a prize of one thousand pieces of gold. Later on King You did so more often than not. In 771 B.C. Quan Rong (a then minority tribe) staged an armed rebellion against the Western Zhou Dynasty. King You ordered urgently to set the beacon tower on fire, but all the sovereign rulers remained unmoved. Consequently King Yu was killed, and Bao Si was taken away. The Western Zhou dynasty vanished. Herein come the Chinese idiom A single smile costs one thousand pieces of gold” and The sovereign rulers are fooled by the beacon fire.”

Entering the Meridian Gate, there are five marble bridges on the Inner Golden Water River, shaped like a bow. The five marble bridges just look like five arrows reporting symbolically to heaven. The five bridges were supposed to represent the five virtues preached by Confucius-benevolence, righteousness, rite, intelligence and fidelity.

Across the Inner Golden Water Bridge, we get to the Gate of Supreme Harmony. During the Ming and early Qing dynasties, here was the place where the emperor gave his audience, accepted documents from his ministers and made decisions here. There are two bronze lions guarding in front of the Gate of Supreme Harmony. The male lion was usually put on the left, playing with an embroidered design ball, which is said to show the emperors supreme power. The other one on the right is the female lion, playing with a lion cub with its left paw symbolizing prosperity of the royal familys offsprings.

Across the Gate of Supreme Harmony , we come to the Hall of Supreme Harmony. Here the emperor held grand ceremonies such as the emperors enthronement ceremony, the wedding ceremony, dispatched generals to the battles, and the emperor received the successful candidates of the imperial examination etc. Also, the emperor held grand feasts each year on New Years Day, Winter solstice and his own birthday.

The Hall of Supreme Harmony is 35.5 meters high with double layered roof that represents the highest construction rank of all. Now, lets ascend the stairs and move on to look at articles in display on two sides of the hall. On the top layer of the terrace stands a sundial on the east an imperial grain measure on the west. The sundial is an ancient time measure or a time-measuring apparatus used in the old days. The sundial tells the time by seeing the shadow of the metal pin on the sundial, which has an inclination angle of 50 degrees with the graduation on it. The grain measure was used as the national standard measure in agriculture in the old days. Both the grain measure and the sundial were symbols of the emperors justice and rectitude.

There are two pairs of incense burners in the shape of bronze dragon-headed tortoises and bronze cranes placed on each side. They are both symbols of longevity.

When you look up the building in the Forbidden City, you can see mythical animal statues on the eaves of each building. Originally, there used to be big wooden nails on the roof to prevent the tiles from sliding down. Later they were replaced by glazed tiles, which were shaped into mythical animal statues for better beautification. They are symbols of auspiciousness and peace, and people believed that they are capable of subduing fire and warding off evil spirits.

Inside of the Hall of Supreme Harmony, you can see the gilded caisson ceiling high above the throne with a magnificent sculpture of a curling dragon playing with a huge pear was called “Xuanyuan Jing”, representing orthodox succession.

This hall is supported by 72 giant columns inside. In the old days, the traditional way of the Chinese to calculate a “room” is that: a square enclosed by four pillars was treated as one “room”, so the hall can be said to have 55 “rooms” in total. The six columns inside are gilded and painted with coiled dragon amidst clouds, and the rest are painted red.

The emperors throne is placed on the dais in the center, and carved in cloud and dragon patterns and gilded. On both sides of the throne are a pair of elephant-shaped incense burners symbolize universal peace and two incense burners shaped as a mythical animal 9,000 kilometers per day and speaking all the languages of nearby kingdoms. Around the throne stand a pair of bronze cranes and in front of the dais is four cloisonné incense burners. The floor on the ground is paved with “Gold Bricks”, specially made in Suzhou.

The Hall of Middle Harmony is a square-shaped hall with a single pyramidic roof standing behind the Hall of Supreme Harmony. This was the place where the emperor would take a short rest before he went to the Hall of Supreme Harmony for grand ceremonies. Every year before the emperor went to the Altars and Temples, the emperor would receive and read the sacrificial address here.

Before the emperor went to the Altar of Agriculture for offering the sacrifice, the seeds intended for spring sowing and the ploughs were examined here, just to show the concern of the emperor for agriculture.

According to the rule, the imperial genealogy should be revised every ten years. The ceremony of presenting the genealogy to the emperor for revision and approval would also be held here.

Now, we come to the Hall of Preserving Harmony, the last of the three front halls.

In the Ming and Qing dynasties, on each New Years Eve and the 15th day of the lunar moth, banquets would be held to entertain the civil and military officials and the princes and envoys of the Mongolian nobles and other nationalities. To celebrate the princesss marriage, the emperor would incite the bridegroom and his father as well as their relatives who served for the imperial government to a banquet.

The Imperial Palace Exam was held here once every three years in the Qing dynasty.

Just behind the Hall of Preserving Harmony, there is a big Marble Rampcarved with mountain cliffs, sea waves, clouds and nine dragons. It is 16.57 meters long, 3.07 meters wide and 1.7 meters thick, and weighs about 250 tons.
