Weproduce 500 billion of plastic bags in a year worldwide and they are thrown awaypolluting oceans, killing wildlife and getting dumped in landfills where theytake up to 1000 years to decompose. Researchers have been unsuccessfully lookingfor a solution.
The16yearold Canadian high school student,Daniel Burd, from Waterloo CollegiateInstitute, has discovered a way to make plastic bags degrade(分解) in as few as 3months,a finding that won him first prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair,a $10000 prize,a $20 000 scholarship, and a chance to revolutionize a majorenvironmental issue.
Burd'sstrategy was simple: Since plastic does eventually degrade, it must be eaten bymicroorganisms (微生物). If those microorganisms could be identified, we could putthem to work eating the plastic much faster than under normal conditions.
Withthis goal in mind, he ground plastic bags into a powder and concocted(调制) asolution of household chemicals, yeast(酵母) and tap water to encourage microbesgrowth. Then he added the plastic powder and let the microbes work their magicfor 3 months. Finally,he tested the resulting bacterial culture on plasticbags, exposing one plastic sample to dead bacteria as a control. Sure enough, theplastic exposed (暴露) to the live bacteria was 17% lighter than the control aftersix weeks.
Theinputs are cheap:maintaining the required temperature takes little energybecause microbes produce heat as they work, and the only outputs are water andtiny levels of carbon dioxide.
“Almostevery week I have to do chores and when I open the closet door, I have piles ofplastic bags falling on top of me. One day, I got tired of it and I wanted toknow what other people are doing with these plastic bags. The answer:not much.So I decided to do something myself.”said Daniel Burd.

本文是一篇新闻报道类文章。介绍了一位到美国度假旅游的法国工程师成功地救出了一位溺水女孩,成为了纽约的英雄。
1.C 细节理解题。根据文章开始的“AFrench tourist...”和后文中的“Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with hisgirlfriend along the pier(码头) when he saw something falling into thewater.”可知Duret 到纽约是为了度假。
2.D 细节理解题。根据“...29??year??oldJulien Duret from France is the man who left the spot quickly after therescue...”可知Duret 把小女孩从水中救出后立刻与他的女朋友离开了现场。
